In a major step toward long-term sustainability, the formalisation of Benin’s carbon credit project was completed in 2024. Under this agreement, 68% of proceeds will be allocated to park management costs – ensuring financial support for ongoing conservation and community development efforts, 10% directly to communities, and 22% to government.
While tourism is a long-term aim, W National Park is unable to host visitors at this stage due to the current security issues in the region, focusing its efforts to alternative income generation in the communities.
It is therefore focusing on working together with the communities on livelihood initiatives, which are mutually beneficial.
