Community Development

The people living around Kundelungu are largely Bemba (east of the Plateau) and Sanga (west of the Plateau), along with other smaller groups. Transhumance (migration of peoples) takes place from the Lake Mweru area primarily into the mixed-use zone – known as the Zone Annex. The watersheds within this area support the livelihoods of some 50,000 people. The Lufira River Valley represents a healthy headwater of the Congo River, supportive of sustainable fisheries and rich aquatic biodiversity. An Environmental and Social Due Diligence Assessment is in progress to better understand the needs of the communities living around the park and to co-create a management plan with input from local stakeholders.
