African Parks sadly confirms that Nkotanyi Geofrey, a dedicated ranger at Akagera National Park, tragically lost his life in the line of duty on 27 February 2026 during an incident involving an elephant.

Born on 15 May 1995, Geofrey joined Akagera in 2015 at the age of 20 and devoted a decade of service to the conservation of Rwanda’s wildlife and the support of his fellow rangers.
Geofrey was a valued colleague, known for his warmth, good humour and strong team spirit. He played an important role in building morale and was widely respected for the positive energy he brought to the workplace.

Beyond his work, Geofrey had a deep appreciation for nature and enjoyed football and birdwatching. Above all, he was a committed family man. Married in 2022, he leaves behind his wife and young son, for whom he held great hopes for the future.

Geofrey will be remembered for his courage, professionalism and kindness. His contribution to Akagera National Park and the impact he had on those who worked alongside him will not be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Nkotanyi Geofrey.
