Tourism forms a vital part in creating a sustainable conservation-led economy. Thanks to thriving wildlife, and continuously upgraded tourism facilities and activities, Majete has become a premier wildlife destination for both local and international visitors. Tourism revenue has increased by 49% since pre-Covid-19, generating US$ 759,087 for the park and making Majete the most economically successful protected area in Malawi, an achievement recognised by the Malawi Tourism Council. Of the total visitors, over 8,000 were local.
Alternative sources of income are also being investigated. A reserve-wide tree survey was conducted in 2022, to verify Majete’s carbon storage as part of plans to use nature-based financing solutions to further support reserve operations and provide an additional source of revenue for local communities.
Training provided for freelance community guides has ensured that they are earning well consistently for their guiding services, while providing unique insights into the area.
