The rustic 6-tent camp is a seasonal bush camp, opening two times a year in peak season periods, and will move location each year offering a brand new experience at each unique setting. With a maximum of 12 guests, Karenge is a quiet and authentic bush camping experience.

The first location for Karenge Bush Camp gives the camp its name karenge means “little foot” in Kinyarwanda. As well as being the first ever location of Karenge seasonal camp, the name echoes the aim of the camp to leave a light footprint on the earth. No permanent construction methods or materials have been used in setting up the camp; only memories will be a lasting reminder of its existence.

Each tent has two comfortable single camp beds, with bedding and extra blankets for cool nights, solar lights are provided for night times and a raised deck and camp chairs outside each tent allow you to enjoy the view from the privacy of your tent. Ensuite bathrooms, each with their own view, are next to the tents and provide bucket toilets and showers, with warm water provided daily, and a canvas hand wash basin. Guest amenities and towels are provided, so all you need to bring are any personal belongings for the night.

A communal dining tent provides a central location for dining and enjoying the evening around the campfire. The camp offers full-board accommodation and wholesome home-cooked food and traditional camp style meals are provided, with breakfast and a packed lunch given each morning. The camp kitchen has solar fridges to ensure cold drinks on warm days and cooking will be done on gas or over an open fire.

Our very first guests had this to say:

"The tents were beautiful, the views spectacular and the food delicious. The service was attentive and we wish the Karenge team every success in this endeavour. For the guests who will surely follow, embrace the adventure, beware the “buffalos” and remember not all those who wander are lost...”

Karenge will be open for the first season until the end of September 2015, closing down and opening again in mid-December until end February 2016. Karenge will open again in June 2016.

The camp was developed as part of an integrated Tourism Development Plan to increase park revenue for the long-term sustainability of the Park. The money received from guests Karenge Bush Camp will go towards the protection and conservation of the park as a whole.
