Garamba National Park records its highest rainfall levels since 1994
During the month of October, Garamba National Park recorded its highest rainfall levels since 1994.
The dry season normally begins at the end of October, but this year the rainfall was extreme (207mm), causing the Dungu River to flood. Boats anchored on the river have become a means of transport to reach other areas in the park. The park manager’s house is under water and hippos can be seen through the office window submerged in the water on the house’s terrace.
The Garamba Guest Lodge was saved from floods because of its higher location as the water levels only managed to reach the terrace of the restaurant. The roads are also flooded and impractical for vehicles to transport goods. Park rangers that have been isolated due to the flooding received rations that were dropped from the park’s aircraft. The water levels are slowly subsiding making it easier to move around the park.
