We are aware of a serious incident that occurred in Muwele Village in Bangweulu Wetlands, Zambia, on September 28th 2021 involving a clash between law enforcement officials including police and the Muwele community. The incident arose as a result of an attempted arrest of an individual suspected to be involved in illegal trading of bushmeat. Our understanding at this time is that 21 community members were injured with pellets arising from gunshots fired by law enforcement officials. All injured individuals have been hospitalized to treat their wounds. Our team in Bangweulu is working with government officials to monitor the situation and further updates will be made as they become available.
