African Parks was among the charities that participated in the 2017 People’s Postcode Lottery annual Charity Gala where thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery they celebrated the £66.3 million that was generously awarded in 2016 to charities and good causes around the world.

African Parks is delighted to be one of the 69 charities that benefitted from this incredible support with £800,000 received in 2016 alone.

On Tuesday 24 January, at Prestonfield House in Edinburgh, the Charity Gala celebrated the achievements of many charities working across Great Britain and around the world that are supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The event was attended by HRH Prince Charles, Sir David Attenborough, broadcaster Dermot Murnaghan and TV presenter Fiona Philips.

The support of the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery received by African Parks has been a significant contribution towards the restoration of three reserves managed by African Parks in Malawi. Specifically funding is aiding in the process of relocating 500 elephants in an historic translocation initiative undertaken to safeguard the future of the country’s elephants in Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve. With 261 elephants already safely moved and the remaining 250 set to be moved in mid-2017, players of the People’s Postcode Lottery are helping to restore three globally iconic parks for wildlife tourism and are helping to boost local economies in Malawi.

“We are tremendously grateful to the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery for supporting our conservation work in Malawi” said Sophie Vossenaar, African Parks’ Director of Fundraising in Europe. “Their support has enabled us to aid in the restoration of Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve in Malawi through construction of a needed perimeter fence for the safety of the park, its elephants and other wildlife, and for the surrounding communities. Following on the success of Majete Wildlife Reserve, we are now committed to preserving these other parks in Malawi, and the players are very much a part of this optimistic story.”

Clara Govier, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “Our Gala is such a special time in People’s Postcode Lottery’s calendar where we come together and celebrate the incredible amount of money raised by our players and the fantastic work carried out by the supported charities as a result of the support. We continue to be overwhelmed by the incredible support of our players and thank them for their funding.”
