How to Move a Rhino

“How do you move a rhino?” is a question we often get, especially after having rescued 2,000 of them last year, with the goal of rewilding every single one by translocating them to safe protected areas in Africa over the next decade.

So this is how in 10 steps (please do not attempt this at home 😊):

  1. Dart: Tranquilize rhino with dart to keep it safe and calm for the journey ahead.
  2. Pack: Guide drowsy rhino into crate and use crane to hoist crate onto truck.
  3. Drive: Head to airport.
  4. Load: Lift crate into airplane’s cargo hold. Wheels up.
  5. Unload: Land. Unload crate onto truck.
  6. Drive: Head to new home.
  7. Place in Boma: Place rhino in temporary holding pen (a boma) to help it adjust to new environment.
  8. Monitor: Carefully watch rhino in boma.
  9. Release: After monitoring period, release rhino into wider ecosystem. Continue close monitoring.
  10. Repeat: Do it again 1,999 times.
