Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels

African Parks' law enforcement teams establish security within each park, which extends relative stability to the surrounding areas. In countries and regions of ongoing political and social insecurity, such as Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Chad, the parks’ law enforcement teams have played a significant role in decreasing violence and the impact of organized crime within and in the periphery of these parks, thus building spheres of influence beyond our boundaries.

Additionally, the management structure we establish ensures that adjacent communities and local stakeholders are engaged in decisions that impact their well-being and livelihoods and are well-informed on park management interventions and the Rangers that enforce the agreed upon rules. This ultimately promotes a peaceful and inclusive society within and surrounding each park managed by African Parks. The Park Management Boards, with representation from partner institutions, key stakeholders and African Parks, are an essential tool to ensure good governance. The Management Board provides strategic oversight on broader issues, such as park boundaries, natural resource use regulations, land use planning and material decisions that impact community livelihoods; meaning that local communities have direct input into the decisions that affect them. This collaborative approach to park management incorporates participatory and representative decision making and establishes the park as an accountable and transparent institution at the local level.
