Life Below Water
Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
Spanning over 350,000 acres of productive seascape and five islands off the coastline of Mozambique, Bazaruto Archipelago National Park encompasses terrestrial and marine habitats of unique ecological value, and African Parks' first marine park under management. Bazaruto is an important sanctuary for over 2,000 fish species and iconic marine megafauna – including the last viable population of dugong in the Western Indian Ocean – and is also home to a local population of approximately 5,800 people who are entirely dependent on marine resources for survival.
By implementing the same holistic approach to park management discussed above, African Parks is establishing effective management and improved law enforcement to counteract unsustainable fishing and resource-use and investing in conservation-led economic development.
