Improving Health in Africa’s Protected Areas

African Parks and Americares have partnered to benefit nearly 100,000 people living in and around conservation areas.

African Parks and Americares have partnered to strengthen the capacity of local health centres to provide care to people living around Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve in Malawi. The partnership builds on the capabilities of both organisations; Americares is the world’s leading non-profit provider of donated medicine and medical supplies, and will deploy its proven tools and resources to improve health centres. While African Parks, manages the largest protected area and ranger force for any one NGO on the continent, and will employ effective park management through its local operations, networks and relationships to meet the shared goal.

Over the next three years, health centres around Liwonde and Majete will undergo much-needed improvements, including the restoration of running water to enhance patient and health worker safety. Americares will also deliver medicines and medical supplies to the Ministry of Health facilities. Health centre staff will also receive training through the new partnership, including instruction in infection prevention and control measures, maternity care and new-born care. In addition to proving primary care services, two of the health centres serve as birthing centres for the local communities. African Parks’ partnership with Americares will work on establishing corridors of human health and well-being, helping deliver the benefits of well-run protected areas to the people that need them most.
