Gervaz Thamala was born in Malawi. Before his first employment with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife in Malawi, Gervaz attended a two-year Certificate course in Wildlife Management at Natural Resources College in Malawi. He has a Diploma in Wildlife Management from the College of African Wildlife Management (CAWM) and an Honours Degree in Natural Resources Management. He has worked in Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve, Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, Liwonde National Park and Kasungu National Park, where he rose through the ranks of a ranger to the Park Manager. At Kasungu National Park, Gervaz became Principal Parks and Wildlife Officer and was responsible for central region as Regional Warden. For four years he worked with Peace Parks Foundation as a Law Enforcement Advisor for the Malawi-Zambia Nyika Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA). In 2012, Gervaz was hired by the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM) as Executive Director. He worked there until August 2015 when he moved and joined African Parks Majete as Field and Operations Manager.
