Bruce was raised on a farm in Zimbabwe where he completed his National Service before attending the University of Cape Town.  After graduating in 1979 he was employed as a marine biology researcher in the Zoology Department where his work was primarily aimed at providing a scientific basis for the sustainable utilization of coastal marine resources. He obtained his PhD (Marine Ecology) in 1988.  In 1993 he moved to Angola where he managed a number of fisheries and tourism projects before being appointed, in 2013, as the International Consultant on the Angolan National Biodiversity Project: Rehabilitation of the Iona National Park. He remained with this project until its termination in 2018 and then joined the African Parks team as Iona’s Park Manager in 2020.
